Sin embargo, no existe al presente una solución conservadora perfecta ya que todas pueden potencialmente irritar al ojo. Abstract A summary of the resource. PROPOSITO: Análisis de las diversas patologías asociadas al uso de lentes de contacto. Aborda la distribución realtiva porcentual de sus apariciones y las causas probables de la ocurrencia de cada una de ellas. METODOS: La investigación tomó como objeto de estudio a un grupo compuesto por 59 personas con trastornos oculares ocasionados por el uso de lentes de contacto. Ese grupo fue seleccionado al azar entre el conjunto de ususarios de lentes de contacto que asistieron en consulta al Servicio de Emergencias del Hospital Oftalmológico Santa Lucía de Buenos Aires durante el perídodo transcurrido entre el 26.11.01 y el 29.04.02. En todos los casos se llevó a cabo el examen oftalmológico y se tomaron muestras para el estudio bacteriol\\\{ogico. Los resultados obtenidos se cuantificaron y se trataron estadísticamente. RESULTADOS: Se determinó que los motivos más frecuentes de consulta han sido la sensación de cuerpo extraño en el ojo y los síntomas de infección. Las patologías presentadas por los pacientes fueron básicamente erosión corneal, pannus, complicaciones infecciosas, edemas y alergias. Esas patologías pudieron expresarse como variables dependientes del tipo de lentes utilizados, del régimen de su uso, de su antigüedad y principalmente del grado de limpieza y desinfección al que fueron sometidos durante su vida útil. CONCLUSION: La investigación ha podido establecer ciertas correlaciones fuertes: entre el pannus, los edemas y las erosiones corneales por un lado y las lentes blandas o hidrofílicas convencionales de uso diario por el otro, y, a su vez, entre las infecciones y las lentes descartables de uso extendido ocasional o permanente. Se determinó que los principales mecanismos y factores ligados a estas correlacoines fueron la hipoxia corneal, los problemas de ojo seco y especialmente la contaminación de las lentes. El trabajo permite concluir que el correcto uso de una lente de contacto bien adaptada y el cumplimiento del régimen de uso requerido por cada paciente, acompañado por la ejecución de las prácticas regulares de limpieza y desinfección recomendadas, puede evitar casi en su totalidad la aparición de las patologías asociadas al uso de este dispositivo de corrección visual.
