El Dr. Alberto Ciancia nació en el año 1924 en un pueblo de la Pcia. de Buenos Aires llamado Villa Iris. En el año 1960 se recibió de médico en la Unversidad de Buenos Aires. Mientras desarrollaba su actividad como oftalmólogo en el Hospital de Niños Ricardo Gutierrez, comenzó a marcar sus observaciones sobre un grupo de niños con esotropía de gran ángulo con limitación bilateral de la abducción, dando a conocer estos hallazgos en el año 1962. Esto hizo que a este grupo de pacientes con características estrabológicas bien definidas se lo reconociera a nivel nacional y mundial como “Síndrome de Ciancia”. Hacia fines de los años 1960, junto a otros profesionales latinoamericanos, forjaron los cimientos del Consejo Latinoamericano de Estrabismo.
